How to use this calculator
- Enter your age and your current savings.
- Under “While you save”, set your retirement age and monthly savings.
- Under “In retirement”, set how long the money should last, your monthly spending and any other income.
- Read the graph: the solid line is your plan, and the dashed line is the same plan with the monthly savings needed to cover it.
How to read the result
If the plan falls short, the headline gives the age the money runs out and the monthly savings that would close the gap. Try a later retirement age, lower spending or a different return to see how each one changes the answer.
What the graph leaves out
This is an educational scenario, not investment advice or a promise. It does not model market volatility, the order of good and bad returns, taxes, exchange rates, public pension eligibility, one-off expenses or changing spending needs. A smooth line can hide the risk of running out sooner. Try lower returns and a longer retirement.
Method, formula and sources
The model runs month by month. Savings are added at month-end; retirement withdrawals happen at month-start. The annual return, asset fee and inflation become one monthly real growth factor. Balances stop at zero, and an unmet withdrawal is recorded as a shortfall.
Monthly real factor = ((1 + return) × (1 − fee) ÷ (1 + inflation))^(1/12). Rates use decimals. During saving: next balance = balance × factor + contribution. During retirement: next balance = max(0, balance − withdrawal) × factor.
